ORIGIN: Found in central Ecuador in cloud forests at elevations of 3400 to 3700 meters.
DESCRIPTION: Giant sized, cold growing terrestrial with erect, branching when mature, cane-like, terete, shortly branching stems carrying 5 to 6, on the branches, along the apical 2/3's of the stem, alternate, spreading, lanceolate-elliptic, somewhat rounded apically, low dorsal keel, minutely crenulate marginally, articulate below into the base leaves that blooms in the spring through summer on a terminal, erect, occurring only once, racemose, short, thick inflorescence with the peduncle bractless and the rachis completely enveloped by prominent, half to nearly as long as the ovary, widely triangular-ovate, gradually smaller apically, spreading floral bracts and carrying to 45, resupinate, successively opening, 3 to 6 open at a time, fleshy flowers.
