Rare Earth Orchids in 2020
Description: A sun loving deciduous terrestrial large bulb American orchid. It produces new growths in January/February and blooms in March. Blooms are 1-2 inches and nearly all bright yellow but sepals often possess a light greenish tint. Blooms are held on a multi branched inflorescence that can reach six or seven feet long.
Culture: I grow this plant in large wood baskets or 10 inch net pots and divide/repot every three-four years. Media includes clay pellets/medium charcoal/medium perlite and small cork chips. Water heavily during active growth but withhold water immediately following emergence of new growth at the base of the newest bulbs in spring. After bloom spikes emerge from the new growths and reach an inch or two long, water may be resumed. I fertilize weekly and full strength but reduce fertilizer after leaves drop in fall.
