Blooming Stenglottis Venus “jamboree “

General Discussion

by John Urey

My plant has thrived for four years and now has two plants but it has not bloomed. How can I help it to decide to bloom? Special amount of light? Water? Fertilizer? ????

Hi John, Looking up Sngl. Venus, it is half fimbriata and half longifolia. Fimbriata culture calls for shaded to dappled light, cool to warm, strong air movement at all times, about 70% humidity, watering when growing & excellent drainage. “Growers in South Africa report that for success with these plants, the crown should be placed just beneath, or at the same level as the medium in a shallow dish or pot in a very well-drained and aerated medium.” Looking at longifolia culture it states the plant requires bright light to flower, but light should be filtered or diffused, and plants may need protection from midday sun. Strong air movement should be provided at all times. They do a rest in winter but care should be taken so the media is not totally dry or the tubers desiccated. Resume watering when new shoots appear at the surface of the compost. Eliminated fertilizer until new growth starts and heavier watering is resumed in spring. Paz.sanbi.org has a great description on how to grow it. There may be a subtle change to get the plant to bloom. I see one was awarded in San Francisco, California in 2001 with 15 inflorescences. Also check out darlingorchids.com, they sell Sngl and can give you additional advice! Good luck, Carol
