Using triacontanol on orchids

General Discussion

by Greg Barne

I am looking for information on how to use triacontanol with orchids. I am specifically interested in the frequency of application, i.e. weekly, monthly etc and what strength. The instructions I have are not specific to orchids with the general application rates vary 0.1-1mg/L. The purity of the product is given at 98% triacontanol.

Hi Greg, I was at the Cattleya Symposium in Florida last weekend and asked Roy Tokunaga from H&R Orchids your question. Roy was not familiar with the product. He gave a talk on Flower Boosters. I don’t know if you are familiar with H&R but they are a nursery in Hawaii that grows a beautiful, clean plant. Roy, in my opinion, is the most knowledgeable grower I know of. Roy said there is very little scientific research on orchids. So there are myths out there people take as fact. “Best growers know how to balance their light, temperature and plant type with a small amount of fertilizer.” He recommends having your water tested. There is an article on the St. Augustine Orchid Society web site by Dr. Bill Argo. Roy said we should use low phosphorus fertilizer. High amounts of phosphorus have been shown to produce a 20 % reduction in blooms. Flushing with water once a week is important. And Roy has seen an increase in blooms using micronutrients like STEM by Peters or Microcomplex by Millers Chemical. Hope this helps. Carol
