Beach sand can be used if it is more than normally coarse and does not obstruct water flow through the pot; Monterey washed sand comes in various sizes in bags from cement companies; it also can be used as a top layer over Rockwool to suppress moss growth. Van. O.S. Bulletin, f87Dec.
