ORIGIN: Found in Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Aguas Caliente, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan, Guerrero, Mexico, Morelos, District Federal, Oaxaca, Puebla, Vera Cruz, Hidalgo, San Luis Potosi, Nuevo Leon and Chiapas states of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras in wet montane forests on slopes under pines, in meadows, pastures and open grassy places at elevations of 800 to 3000 meters.
DESCRIPTION: Small to giant sized, warm to cold growing terrestrial orchid with a leafy stem completely enveloped by wide, inflated leaf bearing sheaths that clsp the stem carrying green, small below, larger in the mid section and smaller above, ovate-orbicular, acute, basally clasping leaves that blooms in the summer on a terminal, 5 [12.5 cm] long, 10 to 15 flowered, racemose inflorescence with densely pubescent floral bracts.
