Leaves should have a red tinge by being exposed to very bright light; they grow on mountain tops on rocks in full sun in winter and slight shade in summer; they need good air circulation; nightly dew provides water during the dry season, so a rest seems not to be needed; temperatures vary from 5 dC (40 dF) at night to 38 dC (lOO dF) during the day.
