Orchid Species: Phragmipedium kovachii
(This name is currently accepted by Kew.)
Phragmipedium kovachii is an orchid species identified by J.T.Atwood in 2002.
DESCRIPTION: Large sized, cool to cold growing terrestrial orchid and since imbroiled in a CITIES hissy fit. This species may be the downfall of the orchid collector and maybe even the scientific community involved in its description. Marie Selby Gardens has been fined for it's participation in describing this species and has asked that the name be changed to P. peruvianum, a virtual impossibility because of nomenclature rules that have no directives in place to acheive it. The name stays here as in-country politics [Both Peru's and the United States] cannot affect the worldwide, scientific community's, nomenclature rules.
FLOWER SIZE: 7 1/4 inch [18 cm]
