ORIGIN: Found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia in wet montane forests on steep, brush or grass covered slopes at elevations of 200 to 3300 meters.
DESCRIPTION: Giant sized, hot to cool growing terrestrial with an erect, terete, woody stem enveloped by approximate, tubular, acuminate sheaths that towards the apex are leaf bearing which are numerous, narrowly lanceolate, ascending, stiff, plicate, many-veined, long-acuminate, basally clasping leaves that blooms in the winter, spring and fall on a terminal, fractiflex, laxly flowered, racemose, to 1 3/4 to 2 1/4 [4 to 6 cm] long, Heliconia-like inflorescence with large floral bracts and carrying large, showy, ephemeral, fragrant successive flowers.
