ORIGIN: Found from Quebec and Ontario to the northeast, Georgia to the south and west to Oklahoma and north to Minnesota in rich, deciduous, open woods with beech and sugar maple.

DESCRIPTION: Medium sized, cold growing terrestrial orchid with a single, basal, elliptical, heavily pleated, white ribbed above, purple beneath leaf withering by summer that blooms in the spring on a loose, 8 to 15 [20 to 37.5 cm] long, racemose, 4 to 12 flowered inflorescence. The common name was derived from the early colonist use of the glutinous substance produced by the tubers to glue things together.
