Lycaste hirtzii is an orchid species identified by Dodson in 1982. Culture information and photos for this orchid are commonly detailed under the currently accepted name of Sudamerlycaste hirtzii.
ORIGIN: Found in Colombia and Ecuador at elevations around 2200 to 2600 meters.
DESCRIPTION: Medium to large sized, cool to cold growing terrestrial on steep embankments in thick woodlands with stout, ovate, slightly compressed, very shallowly furrowed pseudobulbs enveloped basally by several distichous, imbricating leafless below and leaf-bearing above sheaths and carrying 2 to 3, apical, plicate, 3 to 5 nerved, elliptic, acute, contracted below into the channeled, elongate petiolate base leaves that blooms in the fall on a basal, to 22 [55 cm] long, single flowered inflorescence with several tubular bracts and a floral bract all carrying a single, nodding flower.
