Orchid Species: Masdevallia sanchezii

Masdevallia sanchezii is an orchid species identified by Luer & Andreetta in 1980.
ORIGIN: A hot to cool growing, mini-miniature sized epiphyte found in southeastern Ecuador in rainforest at elevations of 300 to 1800 meters although it is much more common at the higher elevations.
DESCRIPTION: A hot to cool growing, mini-miniature sized epiphyte found in southeastern Ecuador in rainforest at elevations of 300 to 1800 meters although it is much more common at the higher elevations and has slender, erect, blackish ramicauls enveloped by 2 to 3, close, tubular sheaths carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, narrowly elliptic, acute leaf that is narrowly cuneate below into the blackish petiole and blooms in the spring on a transverse, slender, 1 1/8 to 1 2/5 [3 to 3.5 cm] long inflorescence arising from low on the ramicaul with a bract near the base and a floral bract carrying a solitary flower that is held below the leaves.
