ORIGIN: Found in Benin, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Central African Republic, Zaire, Chad, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Transvaal and Madagascar in grasslands and rocky ridges in poor sandy to limey soils in deep shade at elevations of 1200 to 2200 meters.
DESCRIPTION: Small sized, cool to cold growing terrestrial with a solitary, horizontal to erect, broadly cordate to rarely broadly ovate, dark green above, sometimes purple beneath veins carrying a raised, more or less raggedy lacerate keel, shortly petiolate, plicate leaf that arises after the seed-capsules have set and withered and before they bloom in the spring on an erect, to 11.2 [28 cm] long, 2 to 7 flowered inflorescence with linear, setose floral bracts.
